Clockwork Eye 2.0 by Sux2BeMe Clockwork Eye 2.0 by Sux2BeMe
Since my Clockwork Eye was my first piece of 2013, and my most popular, I decided to make it my last piece as well.

This is also my first purely digital piece in over 10 years, and my first ever using Cinema 4D.

Edited once...for color corrections and modifications to teensy-weensy itty-bitty details that hardly anyone will notice apart from myself. Kudos if you happen to notice the differences from the old to the new.

Thanks!

Over the top is coming...it's taking a very long time because I'm going WAY overboard on details.

Great work.
Since there is a drawing version, I have to say the I like more the engine details you put there - mainly the diaphragm style you used there.

Thank you.

It's my intention to, probably once a month, address each of my illustrations as concept work. THe eye was just first because the illustration got the best response.

The one thing I haven't really addressed yet, which will be coming soon, is that I matched the illustration for the composition. SInce this is a 3D model, I'm going to be making minor alterations and rendering a better-composed angle of it. Version 2.1 is coming soon.

Amazing :) I like all those small wheels and the amount of details you put into them.
But perhaps red would be a better colour choice for the green cables to represent the blood vessels.

Thanks! And I agree. I've actually altered the model already, but rendering takes about 4-5 hours on my machine. Since it's not super powerful, I can't do anything else (as in my mouse and keyboard even get jumpy) while it's rendering.

Oh such long rendering times sound really bad o:

Eventually, I'll get a job that pays well enough for me to afford a computer that knocks that down a bit.

But yes, to render a very realistic glass of water takes around 20 minutes at screen resolution. It's pretty ridiculous.

Another reason to redo the eye is those green tubes are all backlit...next to subsurface scattering, it's the texture element that causes the biggest holdup in rendering times. If I made them something like copper, reflective and curved, they'd still render 100 times faster.

Imho the green cables are not needed. Also the glass cornea could be a bit more visible. But great job :)

Thank you. I always appreciate criticism, especially since I'm still pretty new to 3D graphics, but am really looking to find a job doing it professionally.

I can agree with you on the green cables. They were mostly an after thought, and I probably should have done them thinner, more plentifully, and probably kept the original copper texture I'd used first. Would have been much more representative of the blood vessels they were supposed to suggest.

The glass cornea surface was a mistake. I didn't really think it through properly, but set it up to have the same optical properties of an actual cornea instead of something more artificial, like crown glass, or lime soda, which would have been more period-appropriate.

The more I think about this, the more I think I'd be worried about it being kinda noisy. All that ticking in your head...

It'd probably still be pretty cool, though.

People eventually get used to things, and if it ever were created, I'm sure people would find a way to get rid of the ticking wink

Thanks everyone for all the :+fav:s! I am through the roof, since this is the first thing I've ever put up that got 100 :fav:s in 24 hours.

It also means I've just set the bar very high for myself, since all the work I put up from now on needs to be at this level. So, it's a good thing I love it.

I dunno...that sounds an awful lot like work.

Actually, I've started working on building the clockwork hand I drew. The rest of the body's gonna take some time. I do want to design a fully articulated automaton at some point. I'm thinking that'll require some collaboration, though.

I'm glad somebody likes them. They were fun for the first couple of hours while I was working on them. After hour 36, they started getting difficult.

Also, thank you!!!
